The noise reduction technique I will describe on this page involves the manual method, where you will align and place each exposure on top of each other in layers.ДЄlthough this method may take a little longer, itвЂ™s a great exercise in the concepts of signal-to-noise ratio, and you have complete control each step of the way. A stacked image will have a much вЂњsmootherвЂќ background and improved image quality overall. When you reduce the amount of noise in your images, you benefit from an improved signal-to-noise ratio. The (not-so-secret) trick is to take several shots of the same area of the night sky and blend them together using a technique called stacking. Thankfully, there are proven ways to reduce noise in your low-light, long exposure shots. An image that looked great on the display screen of your camera may appear quite different when you look at it up close on your computer screen.

IMO, darktable is the most powerful RAW editor/converter available today. Additionally, any of these modules may be applied in multiple instances. darktable performs these adjustments while the image is in its RAW state. Photoshop and/or GIMP can make localized adjustments, but only after the image has been converted from its RAW state. This applicaton includes many manipulation modules, most all of which can be applied globally, or, through the use of its elegant masking abilities, locally to specific areas of the image. It always amazes me that reviewers of darktable tend to gloss over its most distinctive features. It is similar to Lightroom in that the two applications can be used as RAW file converters. With regard to darktable, it is not at all similar to Photoshop. To be fair, one has to concede that there is, most certainly, a learning curve to Photoshop (and other вЂњpremium photo editing softwareвЂќ) which is equally steep to that of GIMP. This is a common critique leveled by users of PS users and users of software more purposely designed to be вЂњeqivalentвЂќ to Photoshop that results from their indoctrination to the PS interface.
